Doula and Lactation Consultant Services
The origin of the word Doula gives us the key to understand its role in the community and in motherhood and parenting, in particular. Doula, a Greek word meaning “woman at the service of women”. This service figure is characterized by humility, respect, presence, containment and a loving gaze towards women and their journey in conscious motherhood.
Not so many years ago, women possessed an inherited cultural baggage with information and close experiences about maternity. A female community, a tribe, within which each maternity was supported and accompanied in a network of families, friends, neighbors and midwives. Labor, childbirth and child rearing were historically women’s territory.
Today, Western culture imposed cultural changes that inevitably reached the life of families, this transgenerational baggage has been blurred; the role and presence of the Tribe has been lost, leaving maternity and solitary upbringing. On the other hand, medicine, practiced almost exclusively by men, took control of births. Feminine power has been displaced from its center and traditional and ancestral wisdom anesthetized.
Even so, we find ourselves with a rebirth in Western consciousness, women seek to regain their place of wisdom, and it is here where we are witnessing the new awakening of feminine knowledge and wisdom. This is where the figure of the Doula comes in, as a link between the culture of motherhood, today’s society and the wisdom that for millennia was carried by women. The Doula becomes a sort of connecting tissue to accompany the awakening of each woman to the maternal wisdom that characterized our essence and nature.
Motherhood is a journey of profound changes. Life is expressed in the pregnant woman in all its shades. Although we are used to a commercial and pink vision of motherhood, as a faithful expression of life, it has many shades, many colors and contrasts, and the Doula can accompany the different processes that arise.
Current science and psychological studies confirm the fundamental importance of the first hours after birth. the fundamental importance of the first few hours after birth.. They are decisive moments for the mental, emotional and physical health of the baby and the adult person he or she will become.
Doulas arrive as Guardians of Life, life that has its gateway at Birth. The mental dye of our culture requires that this internal impulse be validated by information. Doulas are also Guardians and transmitters of this information that although it lives and pulsates in the feminine physiology, it needs our vote of confidence to flourish. Information makes us strong where fears need to be transited.
A motherhood that has support is a motherhood that is fluid, sincere and transforming. Pain and complexity may be present, but by surrendering, we open the possibility of transformation, of healing, of life that opens, expands and expresses its full potential. With each birth, a life, a mother, a father and a family is born. Each of these births needs a favorable, caring, loving and respected environment to flourish.
Doulas’ competencies span the emotional, practical and informational domains. They accompany these processes of transformation and openness by providing the mother and the family with the necessary tools to walk this journey with the greatest possible confidence.
