World Preterm Birth Week

👉 This year the slogan is “Small actions, big impact. Immediate skin-to-skin care for all babies” and aims to promote and remind people of the importance of skin-to-skin contact for the health of these babies and their families. 💓

We take this opportunity to remember the Kangaroo Mother Care Method, an effective and easy-to-apply method that promotes the health and well-being of both premature and full-term newborns. 💫

Its main characteristics are:
💕 early, continuous and prolonged skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby;
💕 exclusive breastfeeding (ideally);
💕 they are started in the hospital and can be continued at home;
💕 young babies can be discharged within a short period of time;
💕 mothers who are at home need adequate support and follow-up;
💕 It is a gentle and effective method that avoids all the movements that generally predominate in a paediatric ward occupied by premature babies.

🤱🏻The first to present this method were Drs. Rey and Martínez in Bogotá, Colombia, where it was developed as an alternative to inadequate and insufficient incubator care provided to premature newborns who had overcome initial difficulties and who only needed to feed and grow.

As Doulas, we think it is important to remember that in moments as delicate as the Birth of a premature Baby, it is essential that the Mother and Family receive the support, care and containment necessary to be able to go through the experience in the best possible way. 🙏🏻
